The CALM programme

The CALM Programme

Interior designers, let's get you paid.

You're brilliant at the design, now let's make sure you're brilliant at the business side too.

Who's it for?

Established interior designers who are in it for the long haul, absolutely ready to build for consistency and done with the feast-and famine of client work.

Start bringing in clients and money consistently, without the overwhelm.

This is for you if you’re ready to:

  • ditch the uncertainty and understand what brings in clients and what doesn’t
  • stop feeling like you’re missing something on the business side.
  • do the work to understand from a business perspective what could be better
  • get away from working too many hours
  • simplify and move your business forward with intention

If the business hasn’t clicked by now, that’s not a sign that you’re no good at this. It’s a sign that it’s time to do things differently.

This is the moment to take stock, strip out what isn’t serving you, and get clear on the things that actually bring in the work. Time to simplify.

Why it matters

I know for a fact great designers still struggle on the business side.

My clients are so talented, so creative – they’re honestly so brilliant – and often the things that get them into overwhelm are nothing to do with the design part, and everything to do with how to get clients, why they always feel ‘on’, how to handle the difficult projects, and why the marketing isn’t working – it’s business stuff.

I’ve never seen a single interior designer who isn’t overcomplicating this. In the first few years of business we try all the things – that’s fair game. It’s really what being a new business owner is about. Taking every client and project, trying different things (all the things!), working out what you love and how you want to run your business.

BUT, there comes a point, about the three-to-five year mark, where adding more stops working. More tactics, more platforms, and more hustle doesn’t move you forward anymore. Adding to your plate is only keeping you busy and worn out.

You’re not a baby business anymore. You’re established. You’ve likely grown in confidence with your design, but the business side is lagging behind, it’s the bit that keeps you stuck.

As an established interior designer you need to get honest and intentional. If you don’t take stock of your business, you won’t know what’s working and what’s not. If you don’t simplify, you end up with a bloated business. And if you don’t get this stuff in check the chance is high that you’ll feel unfulfilled in a job you love, or stop, give up and end up going back to a job you don’t love.

There’s a bit of a fallacy over UK small business closure rates in the first year. In fact 93.4% of new registered businesses survive their first year. Great news. However, only 55.9% reach three years, and 38.4% reach five (ONS, businesses born in 2019).  These figures apply across sectors, regions, and business sizes, which suggests the causes sit with structure rather than short-term economic swings.

Most UK businesses that close do not fail. They retire, merge, restructure or simply stop.

Don’t tell yourself you’re no good at this and stop. You ARE good at this, you just need to stop acting like a new business owner.

What's the answer?

I’m here to make the business bit easy for you. Getting clients in, getting you paid, making sure that’s happening on a repeatable, sustainable basis. All without burning out.

We don’t need to do more stuff. We need to do less stuff, but with a bit more strategy, a bit more intention and a bit more clarity.

This can be tricky to do on your own. From inside your own business it’s hard to know what is working and what’s not. It’s so much easier to tackle this with someone who’s seen it a hundred times and can spot straight away what to keep, what to let go of, and where to focus your effort.

The thing I know how to do is help designers see what’s going on in their business. Everything I’ve done, with every client until now, has given me the answer to the few things that will make a difference. This is what we’ll walk through in the CALM programme and it’s based on my CALM method.

This is my jam. I’m really good at spotting where you’re leaking time, energy and money in your business. I can also spot the things that you’ve lost along the way – the skills, the talent that is special to you, the bits that you’re really good at.

The CALM method is designed to make sure your brilliant design skills are actually getting you paid.

What will change

By the end of our four months together you’ll be:

  • Off the mental treadmill of “what should I be doing?” and clear on your next steps
  • Not getting dragged around (by clients, projects, the latest marketing ‘must-do’)
  • No longer piling more on to an already full plate
  • Confident about what actually brings in leads, clients and income, and how to do it (not a spreadsheet person? No problem, we’ll get you to your numbers in whatever way works for your brain).
  • Free to focus on the design you love
  • Positive, energised and ready for what’s next (not burnt out and running on empty)

What you can expect

A space for established designers to get a handle on the things that will make a difference, without having to guess and without building a business that will lead to burn out. We’ll look at how to make your leads more consistent, and get you paid more – and how to do it in a much more spacious way than you probably are right now.

This is curated. It will be kept to a small group intentionally. I want to make sure every call feels spacious and no-one feels rushed.

You’ll work alongside other established interior designers. I know from experience that the community aspect is massive. Half the magic is realising it’s not just you, and learning from everyone else’s questions too. It’s so good to have consistent, on-going support. It gives us breathing space as well as momentum and accountability.

But I know that more focused attention is really lovely too, so there’s a personal one-to-one up for grabs for early sign-ups.

There are four group calls. Each month we cover one part of the CALM method and work through it together:

  • CLARITY – get clear on what you’re building and where you’re headed
  • ALIGNED ACTION – focus only on what moves your business forward
  • LIMITS – protect your time and energy with boundaries that hold
  • MINDSET – clear the inner stuff that keeps you stuck

We all need spaces where someone sees what makes us unique, what makes us brilliant and reflects it back to us. I’ll be walking side by side with you to make sure you know what’s working, what’s not, what could be better.
