Good advice isn't the problem
There's no shortage of good advice out there for interior designers. Raise your prices. Build better systems. Get clearer on your marketing. I give a lot of it myself, but on its own it's not enough, because it skips the person behind the business.
What's equally important is knowing which thing to do first, and how to build around your time, your energy, the way you think, and the type of business you want to run.
So, I built the CALM
MethoD
Clarity, Aligned Action, Limits, Mindset.
CALM came out of fourteen years running my own studio, and years of mentoring designers through the same sticking points.
It’s a holistic approach that looks at the person behind the business, not just the business itself.
This is my resistance to an always-on culture and I use it to steer interior designers out of the weeds and away from overwhelm.
The four CALM pillars
Here’s how the CALM method works.
C
Clarity
Understand what you’re building.
Your values, your vision, your audience and your positioning — and how that clarity feeds everything that follows: your services, your ideal clients, your direction. You can’t prioritise until you’ve chosen.
A
Aligned Action
What’s the data telling you?
We look at the insights from your business, so you can make informed, strategic decisions. You get time back as you let go of what no longer fits, and focus only on what’s making a difference. This is the anti-spaghetti approach.
L
Limits
Time, energy and space.
We take account of the time and energy you’ve actually got, and build the boundaries and systems that protect it. This is how you keep your creative edge instead of losing it to the busy-ness of work and life
m
Mindset
The inner stuff that keeps you stuck.
Perfectionism, people pleasing, money blocks, fear-based decisions, self-worth. We uncover the limiting beliefs that could be holding you back, and build the self-belief that sits underneath every decision you make.
Why the order matters
It all starts with Clarity. It’s the best way to build your business with intention. And once you understand the direction you’re heading, it makes taking Aligned Action simpler: focusing only on what moves your business forward. With your attention on fewer things, managing your Limits (your energy, time and boundaries) becomes so much easier. The foundation that holds you and your business steady is Mindset. It’s good to work on at any stage, but it’s much easier to tackle once everything else is in place.
The smoothest route to more profit and less overwhelm is to work through the CALM method step by step.
The CALM method
...isFOR you if:
- You want to run a profitable interior design business without the overwhelm.
- You know you're a good designer, but running the business side still feels like winging it.
- You're ready to work intentionally, rather than trying the next thing and hoping it sticks.
- You're open to looking honestly at what's working in your business and what isn't.
- You want a method you can tailor to your business, whatever your stage.
...and NOT for you if:
- You're looking for a quick fix or a silver bullet — this is real work, done at your pace.
- You thrive on chaos and adding more to an already full plate.
- You like the thrill of winging it and never quite knowing where the next project's coming from.
- You're not willing to look honestly at your numbers or your habits.
- You want someone to hand you a formula and do the thinking for you.
Work with me on CALM
CALM runs through everything I do — the coaching, the group programme, and the book I’m writing.
Here’s where you can put it to work in your business.
The deepest version is the CALM Reset: six private sessions taking you and your whole business through the method.
Prefer to work through it alongside other designers?
The CALM programme runs as a small group over four months, with the first cohort opening this September.
